A Posthumous Applause

I have seen a lot of movies in my life, witnessed many characters, but I don’t know if I have ever seen a performance as great as the one given by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.  For those of you unaware, he played the Joker in this Batman film. i really cannot describe the brilliance of his performance in words, so I did some research on his role and this is what I have to offer.

– When Ledger described his character, he called him a “psychopathic, mass murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy.” To prepare for the role, Ledger lived alone in a hotel room for a month, coming up with the character’s posture and voice. He kept a diary, in which he recorded the Joker’s thoughts and feelings to guide himself during his performance.

– Before confirming to play the Joker in 06, Steve Carell and Robin Williams were among many who expressed interest in the role. Carell was stuck with Get Smart, and Robin WIlliams is still trying to recover from RV. I can’t imagine what this movie would’ve been like without Ledger.

– All of Ledger’s scenes appear as he completed them in the filming. The director, Chris Nolan, added no digital effects to alter Ledger’s performace.

If you have the time, go see Dark Knight. It is an amazing movie, and an amazing performance by Ledger. He will be greatly missed by all.
